Other Types Of Illegal Discrimination

Discrimination is prohibited not just in employment, but in many areas such as housing and access to credit. The statutes of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York contain specific laws prohibiting discrimination against certain groups of people, in certain circumstances. The lawyers at Markowitz & Richman know these laws inside and out. We will listen to you and explain how the laws relate to your situation.

Understanding Pennsylvania’s Laws

For example, the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (LAD) prohibits subjecting people to different treatment based on:

“race, creed, color, national origin, nationality, ancestry, age, sex (including pregnancy), familial status, marital status, domestic partnership or civil union status, affectional or sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, atypical hereditary cellular or blood trait, genetic information, liability for military service, and mental or physical disability, perceived disability, and AIDS and HIV status.”

But it depends on the context whether a certain group has special protection — for example, familial status is only protected in buying or renting housing. This is due to a historical pattern of discrimination in this context.

Pennsylvania’s law is called the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act. Cities can also enact their own regulations regarding discrimination.

Discrimination is not dead. In fact, in the last decade, there has been an increase in reports of discrimination against people of Islamic faith. Racial discrimination and gender discrimination still exist as well. Regardless of what category you fall under, you should not have to put up with mistreatment based on it.
